KATHMANDU: Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has welcomed the government's decision to mandate the use of domestic goods in public institutions. The CNI has expressed belief that the government's latest decision will significantly promote local production.
On the recommendation of Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS), the government passed 'Directive for the Use of Domestic Products in Public Institutions 2081' during the Cabinet meeting on Friday. This decision has been encouraging for the entire private sector, including CNI which has been leading the Make in Nepal-Swadeshi campaign since signing a partnership agreement with MoICS on June 24, 2021.
The government has provided support and partnership in implementing the Make in Nepal-Swadeshi campaign, which aims to promote the production, consumption, and export of domestic goods and services. CNI believes this support will enhance the production and use of local products.
The campaign was formally launched in 2021 when the current Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, was in office. CNI had urged the government to mandate the use of domestic goods in government and public institutions.
The private sector organisation has expressed the belief that the government's latest decision will be pivotal in achieving the Swadeshi campaign's goals. CNI has also urged for the full implementation of the directive.
Meanwhile, CNI has launched a Business to Business (B2B) portal alongside policy suggestions to ensure the success of the Make in Nepal-Swadeshi campaign. CNI has recently joined the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF)'s 'Agora' platform and has been working to promote domestic goods. Additionally, CNI has obtained the collective trademark for Swadeshi.
