Import of 4-wheelers thru Birgunj customs decreases in 1st 5 months of current FY

BIRGUNJ, PARSA: The import of four-wheeled vehicles through the Birgunj customs checkpoint has decreased in the first five months of the current fiscal year, starting from July 16.

According to the Birgunj Customs Office, 482 jeeps, cars, and vans worth over Rs 920.33 million were imported via the customs checkpoint in the first five months of the current fiscal year.

Vehicle imports have fallen by 38.13% in terms of numbers and by 16.43% in terms of revenue compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

A total of 779 jeeps, cars, and vans worth over Rs 1.2 billion were imported in the first five months of the previous fiscal year, the customs office reported.

The customs office collected revenue of over Rs 2.8 billion from the import of these vehicles till mid-December of current fiscal year 2024/25.

Data shared by the customs office also indicate a decrease in the import of both petrol-fuelled and electric-powered four-wheelers through the Birgunj customs checkpoint.

Ninety-seven electric jeeps, cars, and vans worth over Rs 14.78 million were imported through this customs point in the first five months of the current fiscal year.

The import of electric vehicles has reduced by 59.07% in terms of numbers and by 58.63% in terms of revenue collection compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

A total of 237 electric vehicles— jeeps, cars, and vans— worth over Rs 465.85 million, were imported during the same period last fiscal year. The customs office collected revenue worth over Rs 203.55 million from the import of these electric vehicles during that period.
