KATHMANDU: Nepal saw a significant increase in tourist arrivals in 2024, with more than 1.14 million foreign tourists visiting the country. A total of 11,047,024 tourists entered Nepal over the year, according to data released this morning, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said.
This marks the highest number of tourists Nepal has welcomed since the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic. NTB Director Marin Raj Lamichhane stated that, on average, 3,000 tourists arrived in Nepal daily this year. The arrival of tourists in 2024 showed a substantial rise of over 14% compared to 2023.
In 2019, Nepal recorded 1.197 million foreign tourists. However, the Covid 19 pandemic, which began in early 2020, halted tourist arrivals until 2022.
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation's data from the last six months indicate that Nepal's tourism industry has rebounded by 96% post-Covid 19. The influx of tourists has been attributed to events such as the Nepal Premier League, Global Buddhist Summit, International Balloon Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival, among others.
