KATHMANDU: Samana Banking Puraskar Guthi has awarded the prestigious Samana Banking Puraskar, worth Rs 75,000, to banking expert BN Gharti for the year 2081.

The accolade was bestowed upon Gharti for his book, Banking Anushasan Digo Bikaska Lagi (Banking Discipline for Sustainable Development).

At a programme, Minister for Health and Population, Pradip Paudel, honoured Gharti and presented the award. Minister Paudel served as the chief guest at the event.

The evaluation committee, which included Prof Dr Bishwambhar Pokharel, Prof Dr Govinda Nepal, and banker and litterateur Krishna Pradhan, recommended Gharti for the award.

Gharti's extensive career spans work at Nepal Bangladesh Bank, NIC Asia Bank, and KIST Bank, where he also served as Chief Executive Officer. Following the merger of KIST Bank with Prabhu Bank, Gharti took voluntary retirement and has since been training boards of directors, top management, and employees of banks and financial institutions, providing advice on policies, procedures, and strategic plans.

Under his advice, several financial institutions have successfully navigated challenges and undergone institutional mergers.

In his book, Gharti uses simple language accessible to the general public. He analytically presents issues that Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) needs to address, discusses the paths taken by BFIs, and offers practical suggestions for future decisions. He dispels the illusion of excessive earnings by banks using statistical evidence and prioritises operational risk and compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, explained Krishna Pradhan, a member of the evaluation committee.

"The book authored by Gharti is excellent from a product standpoint. The topics covered and analysed are highly relevant, and the subjects are examined in great detail, which is why we recommended it for the award," said Krishna Pradhan.

The event was chaired by Guthi Chair Dr Rewat Bahadur Karki and attended by former NRB governors Ganesh Bahadur Thapa and Dr Tilak Rawal, Kathmandu University Registrar Prof Dr Achyut Wagle, and other distinguished guests.
