KATHMANDU: The extension of petroleum pipeline from Amlekhgunj in Bara district to Lothar in Chitwan district is set to commence soon, following the completion of the 69-kilometre pipeline from Motihari in India to Amlekhgunj.

Engineer Manoj Thakur, Spokesperson for Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), announced that a high-level technical team has already completed a field study on the extension from Amlekhgunj to Lothar, and the detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared. "A high-level team of technicians from Nepal and India has conducted a field study and is now preparing the DPR," Thakur said.

Thakur also mentioned that a petroleum storage facility with a capacity of 100,000 litres will be constructed at Lothar alongside the pipeline extension. He indicated that the western and northern parts of the country will not face a shortage of petroleum products once the pipeline from Amlekhgunj to Lothar is operational.

The test importation of petroleum products through the pipeline has already begun following the completion of the extension from Motihari to Amlekhgunj.

Pralayankar Acharya, Chief of NOC Madhes Provincial Office Amlekhgunj, confirmed that all works related to the expansion of the Motihari-Amlekhgunj petroleum pipeline have been completed. He added that petrol and kerosene have been transported via the pipeline on a trial basis. "Five thousand and five hundred kilolitres of petrol and 1,000 kilolitres of kerosene have been supplied through the extended pipeline on a trial basis for now. The petroleum products brought via the pipeline are being tested," he said.

Acharya also noted that necessary preparations are underway for the regular importation of petroleum products via this pipeline.
