LHASA: A total of 646 aftershocks have been detected as of Wednesday noon following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, according to the regional government.
The largest aftershock, registering a magnitude of 4.4, occurred approximately 18 kilometres from the epicentre, reported Hong Li, head of the regional emergency management department.
The earthquake has resulted in 126 fatalities and injured 188 others. Efforts to restore telecommunications, roads, and power in the affected region have been successful.
On Tuesday night, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) dispatched a second batch of relief supplies to the quake-hit areas, including 4,300 items such as cotton tents, quilts, and folding beds.
Additionally, the RCSC has sent more than 50 rescue workers to the area, equipped with emergency sanitary toilets, catering vehicles, camper vehicles, and other emergency response supplies.
