Consumer price inflation rises to 6.05 pc in mid-Dec: NRB

KATHMANDU: Year-on-year (y-o-y) consumer price inflation in Nepal rose to 6.05% in mid-December 2024, up from 4.95% a year ago, according to the latest macroeconomic and financial situation report released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Friday.

Inflation in the food and beverage category surged to 9.99%, while non-food and service inflation stood at 3.92% during the first five months of the current fiscal year 2024/25. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, these indices had increased by 5% and 4.92%, respectively.

Within the food and beverage category, the y-o-y price index of the vegetable sub-category soared by 43.05%, pulses and legumes rose by 10.66%, cereal grains and their products by 9.70%, and ghee and oil by 9.39%, while the price index of the spices sub-category decreased by 1.18% and sugar & sugar products fell by 0.83%.

In the non-food and services category, the y-o-y price index of miscellaneous goods & services climbed by 7.98%, alcoholic drinks by 7.01%, clothes and footwear by 6.75%, and furnishing & household equipment by 5.29%.

During the review month, the y-o-y price index in rural areas increased by 6.52%, while in urban areas it rose by 5.89%.

Based on provinces, y-o-y consumer price inflation in mid-December was recorded as follows: Koshi at 7.36%, Madhesh at 6.77%, Bagmati at 5.84%, Gandaki at 4.81%, Lumbini at 5.53%, Karnali 4.19% and Sudurpashchim 6.66%.

For the first five months of the current fiscal year, y-o-y consumer price inflation in the Kathmandu Valley, Tarai, Hill, and Mountain regions surged to 5.82%, 6.31%, 5.65%, and 6.58%, respectively.

Wholesale Price Inflation Up

The y-o-y wholesale price inflation stood at 6.52% in mid-December 2024, compared to 2.63% a year ago.

The y-o-y wholesale price of consumption goods, intermediate goods, and capital goods increased by 12.59%, 3.77%, and 3.20%, respectively. However, the wholesale price of construction materials decreased by 4.14% in the five months starting mid-July.
