KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a writ petition seeking to halt the implementation of the national identity card.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and Justices Abdulaziz Musalman and Nripa Dhwoj Niroula rejected the petition, clearing the way for the government to proceed with the initiative.
The petition challenged the government's decision to make the national ID card mandatory for accessing social security allowances, mobile SIM cards, and all public services.
Earlier, on 6 June 2024, the Council of Ministers decided to require the national ID for renewing social security allowances in 28 districts from 16 July the same year.
SC Spokesperson Achyut Kuikel noted that the written verdict is yet to be issued.
