KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has expressed his belief that festivals like Sonam Lhosar play a vital role in strengthening national unity.
In his message of best wishes on the occasion of the Sonam Lhosar festival, which the Tamang community is celebrating today, the Head of State emphasised that such festivals promote mutual goodwill, tolerance, and fraternity in Nepal's multiethnic, multilingual, and multicultural society.
"I hope that Sonam Lhosar festival further strengthens the unity among all Nepalis and energises everyone to work towards building an economically and socially prosperous country," President Paudel stated.
According to the lunar calendar, Sonam Lhosar is celebrated on Magh Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magh. For the Tamang community, it marks the New Year.
During this festival, people from the Tamang community worship their clan deity, perform nature worship, recall Buddha's teachings, and share happiness amidst festive celebrations.
In addition to the Tamang, other communities such as the Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha, living in various parts of the country, also celebrate this festival according to their customs and traditions.
