Social Media Bill introduced to strengthen national unity: Minister Gurung

LAMJUNG: Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has asserted that the Social Media Bill, 2081, has been introduced to strengthen national unity. 

Speaking at the inauguration of the eighth district convention of Press Chautari Nepal, Lamjung district chapter, Minister Gurung emphasised that the bill seeks to uphold the core principles of democracy and press freedom, making them more effective in practice.

"The bill has been presented in parliament, and necessary discussions will indeed take place," he stated. "The bill has been introduced to strengthen national sovereignty, independence, and unity." He clarified that the bill aims to regulate and organise social media without any intention of controlling it.

He also highlighted the government's commitment to the right to information (RTI), a fundamental right. He assured that the bill would not impede people's freedom of expression and press freedom.

He commended the role of Press Chautari in the country's development and urged journalists to work towards prosperity and the creation of a civilised society while supporting democracy.

In a separate event, Minister Gurung inaugurated the new office building of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality in Bhulbhule, Marsyangdi–8. Chairperson of the rural municipality, Arjun Gurung, said that the completion of the three-storey building with 28 rooms would facilitate better service delivery to the public.
