KATHMANDU: Year-on-year (y-o-y) consumer price inflation in Nepal stood at 5.41% in mid-January 2025, compared to 5.26% a year ago, according to the latest macroeconomic and financial situation report released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday.
Food and beverage inflation stood at 7.67%, while non-food and service inflation recorded 4.19% during the first six months of the current fiscal year. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, the price indices for these groups had risen by 5.75% and 4.93%, respectively. Within the food and beverage category, the y-o-y price index for vegetables surged by 28.52%, ghee and oil by 10.67%, pulses and legumes by 9.48%, and cereal grains & their products by 7.23%. Conversely, the y-o-y price index for spices decreased by 3.12%.
In the non-food and services category, the y-o-y price index for miscellaneous goods & services increased by 9.35%, alcoholic drinks by 7.01%, clothes and footwear by 6.75%, and furnishing & household equipment by 5.29%.
During the six months to mid-January, the y-o-y price index in rural areas rose by 5.68%, while in urban areas, it increased by 5.31%.
In the review month, y-o-y consumer price inflation varied across provinces, with Koshi Province at 6.73%, Madhesh Province at 5.96%, Bagmati Province at 5.14%, Gandaki Province at 4.37%, Lumbini Province at 4.83%, Karnali Province at 4.60%, and Sudurpashchim Province at 5.67%. Meanwhile, y-o-y consumer price inflation in the Kathmandu Valley, Terai, Hill, and Mountain regions stood at 5.03%, 5.60%, 5.41%, and 5.27%, respectively.
