KATHMANDU: Three private sector business organisations have called on all parties to avoid jeopardising the country's investment environment.

They urged the agitating groups to cease their protest activities immediately, expressing serious concern over the demonstrations related to construction of a cable car for tourism development and promotion of Pathibhara (Mukumlung) area.

In a joint press statement, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), and Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) stated that strikes organised in the districts of Koshi Province over cable car project have disrupted educational, economic, and social life. The general public has faced problems, and investment-friendly environment for infrastructure development in the country could be compromised.

"It is well known that private sector plays important role in the country's overall economic development. The investment by the private sector in industrial, trade, banking, energy, agriculture, tourism, and communications, as well as the development of various infrastructures and services, has significantly contributed to the country's prosperity. We request the concerned authorities to take this issue seriously, as negative messages will be spread among domestic and foreign investors due to such actions aimed at halting development in the country," the statement read.

The statement highlighted the substantial investments made by the private sector in the tourism industry, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for many. The proposed Pathibhara (Mukumlung) tourism infrastructure is designed to enhance the convenience of visitors, including senior citizens and children. The project also aims to promote the region's religious, cultural, and adventure tourism.

Furthermore, they believe that implementation of this project will contribute to the growth of agriculture and handicraft industries in the area.

"When local authorities and communities agree on the construction of the cable car project, any obstruction along with external interference is an attempt to hinder the development process," the statement read.

The private sector argues that this protest is not solely about one specific project; it has the potential to undermine the investment environment in the country, discouraging future investors from exploring investment opportunities in Nepal.

Emphasising that the problem could be resolved through dialogue, these organisations urged local communities, the concerned authorities, and stakeholders to view this development effort positively and proceed with the Pathibhara (Mukumlung) Cable Car Project smoothly.

In separate press statements issued today, FNCCI's Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali Province chapter presidents also expressed their concern over this matter.
