SOLUKHUMBU: The construction of Lower Solukhola Hydropower Project has nearly reached completion, with the 82-megawatt capacity project achieving 95% physical progress to date.
Located in Tingla, Solukhumbu district, the project promoted by the Lower Solu Hydropower Company has completed the construction of the powerhouse, tunnel, and installation of the turbine and generator, among other components. According to company manager Dharmendra Gotame, the breakthrough of the penstock tunnel is expected soon.
"We are planning to commence commercial production of hydropower in July," Gotame stated.
The transmission line has also made significant progress, with 80%completion. The project, which commenced in September 2016, has been financed with Rs 16 billion loan provided by the European Bank (International Funding Agency) and FMO, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank. The completion of the project is targeted for before September 2025.
This reservoir-based project has established a reservoir in the Salme area of Solukhumbu. Water is supplied through a tunnel to the powerhouse located in Bhadaure, Tingla, approximately six kilometres from Salme.
Due to geographical challenges and the length of the tunnel, the estimated cost of the project has increased. The project employs a total of 700 workers, including local residents.
Upon completion, the national transmission line is expected to receive 23 megawatts of power in winter and 82 megawatts during the rainy season.
