KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari has emphasised the significance of bamboo in fostering a green economy and creating an environment-friendly society.

At a preparatory programme in Lalitpur for the upcoming 'First National Bamboo Summit' to be held from February 27 to March 1 in Diktel, Khotang, NRB Governor Adhikari highlighted the summit's potential to promote new practices and economic sustainability. He stated, "Bamboo is useful and sustainable in daily life, and its role is important in promoting a green economy for economic sustainability."

Former Minister Ganesh Shah expressed confidence in the summit's role in advancing bamboo-based industries, stating that bamboo is linked to religion, culture, tradition, households, small enterprises, and livelihoods.

Rajendra KC, Director General of the Forest Research and Training Centre (FRTC), noted, "Bamboo, a multi-use plant, has an interdependent relationship with human life and livelihoods." He added that branding bamboo as 'Himalayan bamboo' could enhance its export potential.

Pradip Dangal, representing Green Bamboo Creation, remarked, "Plastic materials pollute the environment and have adverse effects on health. By increasing the use of bamboo materials, sustainable natural products can be utilised."

Likewise, Diktel Municipality Mayor Tirthraj Bhattarai outlined the summit's objectives, including exploring possibilities related to bamboo, improving cultivation, and promoting bamboo-based goods and services. He noted that the summit aims to encourage farmers who cultivate bamboo.

About 100 government and non-government organisations, 100 forest user groups, 50 universities and research centres, and 100 students will participate in the summit.

The summit's main slogan has been set as 'Where there is bamboo, there is life; where there is life, there is bamboo'.
