KATHMANDU: Federation of Computer Association Nepal (CAN Federation) has commenced the 30th edition of 'CAN Info-Tech' at Bhrikutimandap Exhibition Hall in Kathmandu today.

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, inaugurated the five-day event, which will run until February 10.

During the inauguration, Minister Gurung acknowledged the contributions of the private sector in the IT field and expressed the government's intention to collaborate with the private sector. He highlighted the need for policy reforms to advance IT as an industry and mentioned ongoing efforts towards these reforms.

FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal stressed the importance of government and private sector collaboration for the development of Nepal's IT sector. He emphasised that achieving the goal of establishing Nepal as an IT Hub requires joint efforts. He noted the potential for the IT sector to export services worth hundreds of billions of rupees and create employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people. He urged the government to implement necessary policy and structural reforms.

Dhakal highlighted FNCCI's advocacy for timely policy reforms in laws related to IT, startups, and innovation. He mentioned that recent amendments by the government, following FNCCI's initiative, will significantly contribute to the sector's growth.

"By approving the ordinance related to the amendment of Some Nepal Acts, Nepali IT companies will be able to invest, open branches, conduct business abroad, and bring the income earned there back to Nepal. This legal provision will enable Nepali IT companies to compete in the international market and increase foreign currency earnings," he said.

He also opined that CAN Info-Tech would support the Digital Nepal campaign by showcasing talents and innovations developed according to the demands of the latest technology, startup innovation, and the local market.

Regarding the draft 'National Artificial Intelligence Policy, 2081' prepared by the government, Dhakal stated that the proposed policy is expected to help build a secure and sustainable AI ecosystem, develop human resources, and promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

On a different note, Dhakal expressed sadness over various protests against development efforts in Nepal, specifically referring to Pathibhara cable car project. He urged political parties and the public to prioritise development over politics and religion.
