Bill on Social Media will be passed with revisions: Minister Gurung

DOLAKHA: Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has said the Bill on Social Media will be passed with revisions, assuring true journalists that they have nothing to fear.

During the inauguration of Jiri Visit Year 2025 on Saturday, Minister Gurung explained that the Bill on Social Media aims to curb negative trends on social media platforms, emphasising that active journalists will not be impacted by its provisions.

Minister Gurung acknowledged that several pieces of feedback had been received regarding the bill and assured that it would be passed with revisions. "There have been extensive debates about the bill, and numerous pieces of feedback have been received. Therefore, it will not be passed in its current form but will be revised based on the feedback," he asserted.

In a separate context, Minister Gurung stated that the government should not be involved in running industries and businesses, which should be the domain of the private sector. He added that the government would facilitate the private sector with appropriate policy frameworks.

He also called for unity in the development of Jiri area, urging people to set aside political biases.

Former Minister Parbat Gurung, Bagmati Province Assembly members Bharat Bahadur KC and Urmila Sunuwar, Jiri Municipality Mayor Mitra Bahadur Jirel, Chair of Melung Rural Municipality Hira Kumar Tamang, and other speakers also expressed their views at the event.

Additionally, Minister Gurung stated that the constitution will be amended based on political consensus among the parties.

Speaking at a news conference organised by CPN (UML) in the Dolkhara district headquarters on Saturday morning, Minister Gurung also stated that the ordinances introduced by the government would be passed based on political consensus.
