WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to establish a new council aimed at boosting US production and export of fossil fuels.
Tasked with increasing US domestic oil and gas production, partly for export, the National Energy Dominance Council will be chaired by Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.
As Trump signed the executive order in the Oval Office, Burgum announced he had signed a licence earlier in the day, allowing the Commonwealth LNG in the US state of Louisiana to export liquefied natural gas (LNG). This marks the first LNG export approval since former President Joe Biden paused approvals in early 2024.
In addition, Trump stated that approximately 635 million acres (2.57 million square kilometres) of offshore federal waters are now open to oil and gas development, ending a ban on new offshore oil and gas drilling ordered by Biden.
"If you look at it from the standpoint of a company, you talk about net worth, they've destroyed our net worth. We're putting it back," Trump said.
