KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arzu Rana Deuba, met with Japan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Miyaji Takuma, on the sidelines of the Eighth Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat, Oman.
During their bilateral meeting, the ministers exchanged views on various aspects of Nepal-Japan relations and mutual interests. Minister Deuba recognised Japan as a significant development partner, contributing to Nepal's socio-economic development.
The discussions included plans for the 70th-anniversary celebrations of Nepal-Japan diplomatic ties in 2026 and potential high-level visits between the two countries. Minister Deuba also sought Japan's support in hiring skilled Nepali workers for the next five years, following last year's agreement.
Minister Rana further urged Japan to assist in reconstructing the BP Highway, which was damaged by the September 2023 floods and landslides. She also requested Japan's cooperation in establishing direct flights between Japan and Bhairahawa-based Gautam Buddha International Airport and Pokhara International Airport. Extending the Narita-Kathmandu flight route to Lumbini would enhance cultural ties and benefit Japanese citizens visiting Lumbini, she said.
Minister Takuma assured he would consider the request after a feasibility evaluation.
