KATHMANDU: The 75th National Democracy Day is being celebrated across various parts of the country today by organising a series of programmes.
President Ramchandra Paudel is scheduled to attend an event to be organised by the Main Celebration Committee at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel this morning to commemorate Democracy Day.
Tributes will be paid to both known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives in struggles for the establishment of democracy in the country.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is slated to address the event. The government has declared today a public holiday in observance of Democracy Day.
Historically, Falgun 7, 2007 BS is recognised as a significant and epochal day in Nepal's history, marking the abolition of the Rana regime and the advent of democracy.
In a message of best wishes issued for the occasion, President Paudel emphasised that the belief that "the sovereignty of the country should rest in the people" was established through the struggle and sacrifice of the martyrs.
