KATHMANDU: Global Compact Nepal (GCN), in partnership with HECAF 360, hosted the 'Zero Waste Management for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Resilience' event in Lalitpur, on March 6.
The gathering brought together leading experts to emphasise the importance of zero-waste strategies in combating climate change and fostering sustainable business practices. Organised in collaboration with the Zero Waste International Alliance and Zero Waste USA, the event highlighted the significant role businesses play in adopting zero-waste principles to achieve a sustainable future.
The programme commenced with opening remarks from GCN President Pradeep Man Vaidya. It featured prominent speakers, including Ruth Abbe, Pål Mårtensson, Christienne de Tournay and Mahesh Nakarmi, who explored how organisations can effectively implement zero-waste strategies. The discussions underscored the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of waste reduction, circular economy models, and responsible consumption.

Zero-waste expert Ruth Abbe showcased global best practices in waste management and outlined how businesses can transition towards a circular economy. She stressed the necessity for policy frameworks and corporate commitments to drive meaningful change.
Pål Mårtensson provided insights into sustainable waste management models adopted internationally. He addressed the role of technology and innovation in reducing waste generation and improving resource efficiency.
Meanwhile, Christienne de Tournay highlighted the societal impact of zero-waste initiatives, focusing on the importance of community engagement and education in fostering sustainable habits. She also presented successful case studies illustrating collaboration between businesses and communities to achieve zero-waste goals.
HECAF 360 Executive Director Mahesh Nakarmi shared the success of a zero-waste programme implemented at Namgyal High Secondary School. He also presented an impactful video showing the harmful effects of plastic waste on wildlife, featuring an albatross that perished after ingesting plastic. Nakarmi’s presentation reinforced the urgent need to adopt waste reduction measures.
The event concluded with the distribution of certificates to newly joined Global Compact members and a vote of thanks from GCN Executive Director Krishna Shah, who expressed gratitude to participants and speakers for their contributions.
