Recalling the transformation of world tourism from Europe, he mentioned that international travel marked the beginning of tourism development. Chon's presentation indicated that the rapid development of the Asia Pacific style of tourism significantly contributed to global tourism growth.
In hotel development, an important part of tourism, the Asia Pacific region leads globally, with 48% of hotels built in this area. Chon's statistics also revealed that the USA holds 16% of the world's share in the development of hotels for tourism services.
The Asian region has made a significant contribution to tourism development, with most of the best airports located in Asia. Prof Chon argued that Asia's hospitality is the 'best and unique' in the world.
He suggested that tourism sector could be made more attractive with new ideas and approaches. He opined that tourism development gains momentum with the adoption of new ideas.
Chon mentioned that tourism destinations can develop significantly with innovative ideas and creations. He explained that customer and employee satisfaction, excellent service, and hospitality are key to driving the tourism business.
He also mentioned that the latest challenge in hospitality sector is the lack of human resources. He stressed the importance of balancing work life and prioritising family in career development. He added that self-interest, social media use, and competent leadership guidance play vital roles in tourism sector development.
Chon presented a 2024 survey showing that 59% of people would leave their jobs, with only 41% remaining active in the hotel and hospitality sector. These statistics indicate a high turnover rate, leading to a concentrated workforce in one sector.
Recognising the need for digital transformation, he noted the increased challenge of embracing technology and urged for progress.
