KATHMANDU: The Consumer Court will come into operation from March 15 onwards.

Tabling the notice on the formation of the Consumer Court at the House of Representatives (HoR) session on Tuesday, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ajay Kumar Chaurasia, informed that the Consumer Court will come into operation from 15 March onwards.

The court has been constituted as per the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS. The government has set up consumer courts with jurisdiction to take action and dispose of consumer-related cases in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts.

Kathmandu District Court Judge Ram Prasad Sharma has been appointed the chairperson of the Consumer Court. Similarly, Gehendra Raj Regmi, a gazetted second-class officer of the Justice Group, and Ananda Raj Pokharel, a gazetted second-class officer of the General Administration Group, have been appointed as members.

Meanwhile, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, presented a proposal to send the Mass Communication Council Bill, 2081 BS, originated in the National Assembly, to the relevant committee for clause-by-clause discussion.

The bill has been introduced with new legal provisions for the management and regulation of radio, television, online, digital or electronic equipment, printing press or other media.

"The Media Council will be established as an autonomous regulatory body for the development of clean, dignified and accountable journalism," the bill states. The organisation will be a self-governing and organised institution with continuous succession.

In Tuesday's meeting, Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri presented a proposal seeking discussion in the House on the Montreal Protocol Kigali Amendment.

Responding to questions raised during the discussion on the proposal, Minister Shahi accepted inputs received from the parliament and pledged to implement them effectively. He said that implementing the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol would make it easier for Nepal to manage environmental issues while minimising the effects of climate change.

The HoR meeting unanimously approved the proposal to endorse the Montreal Protocol Kigali Amendment.

Meanwhile, the next HoR meeting is underway.
