Petroleum imports through Birgunj increase to Rs 122.2bn in 8 months

PARSA: Petroleum products valued at Rs 122.2 billion have been imported through the Birgunj border transit point during the last eight months of the current fiscal year, 2024/25.

The imported items include diesel, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and kerosene. Compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, 2023/24, the imports have increased by Rs 1.67 billion. In the corresponding period of last fiscal year, petroleum products worth Rs 120.53 billion were imported.

Deepak Lamichhane, Chief Customs Administrator at the Birgunj Customs Office, stated that revenue generated from the import of petroleum products has also increased alongside the rise in imports. “The import of petroleum products seems to have increased as it is the time for infrastructure construction,” he explained.

As per the Birgunj Customs Office, Rs 50.13 billion in revenue has been collected from the import of petroleum products so far this fiscal year, compared to Rs 44.80 billion during the same period last fiscal year.

Providing further details, Lamichhane stated that Rs 27.31 billion in revenue was generated from the import of 685,991 kilolitres of diesel worth Rs 61.45 billion over the eight-month period. Similarly, 290,382 kilolitres of petrol worth Rs 25.30 billion were imported, yielding Rs 16.48 billion in revenue.

Additionally, over 210.04 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 24.05 billion were imported in the last eight months, contributing Rs 4.5 billion to the revenue. Comparatively, during the same period in the previous fiscal year, over 186.81 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 19.52 billion were imported, according to the Office.
