KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has informed Parliament about his forthcoming official visit to Thailand and his participation in the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit.
Addressing a meeting of the House of Representatives today, Prime Minister Oli stated that this would be the first official visit by a Nepali prime minister to Thailand in the 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The visit is scheduled to commence on April 1. Prime Minister Oli emphasised the importance of this trip, noting that no official visit has previously been made to Bangkok, which he described as a 'gateway' for Nepalis travelling to countries beyond Nepal's immediate neighbours.
During the visit, Prime Minister Oli is expected to meet the King of Thailand and his Thai counterpart. Two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) related to tourism and culture are set to be signed, along with six MoUs between non-governmental sectors in the presence of the prime ministers of both nations.
The Prime Minister also announced plans to engage with leading Thai business figures and deliver an address at a programme hosted by the Asian Institute of Technology.
Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to address the BIMSTEC Summit on April 4. He also indicated his intention to hold sideline discussions with leaders of member countries attending the Summit, as far as possible.
