KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that breaching constitutional norms after taking an oath under the same constitution would be an act of dishonesty.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the first series of the 'Himalayan Dialogue', organised by Foreign Affairs Media in Kathmandu today, PM Oli said Nepal's development has been hindered by past feudalistic rule. He added that efforts are being made to advance development and good governance in response to public expectations following political change.

Referring to monarchists, PM Oli asserted that defeated feudal practices cannot be restored and argued that continuing such practices would prolong the transition period. He emphasised addressing only legitimate demands, stating, "No one should suffer on the streets."

On the issue of teachers protesting on the streets, PM Oli assured that their demands would be addressed through dialogue. He also highlighted Nepal's commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities in international relations while safeguarding its independence, self-respect, and national interest.

PM Oli noted that Nepal's mountains play a crucial role in blocking hot air from the Bay of Bengal, preventing the sea from overheating, and protecting the region and the world from desertification. "Our country is geographically, naturally, and culturally diverse. Unity in diversity is essential. Without unity, the achievements we want cannot be realised," he said, adding, "Diversity should not be a curse but an asset."

He stressed the importance of Nepal working collectively to address national and international problems, contributing to global security and humanitarian welfare while prioritising national interest in a world dominated by self-interest and weakened ideals.

PM Oli also emphasised advancing national interests with geopolitical awareness, cautioning against using geopolitics as an excuse to cover weaknesses. "It is not necessary to abandon national interests and ideas with international accountability. There should be no politics in the name of friendship with any neighbour. We don't belong to anyone's strategic alliance. We are in favour of peace," he stated.

The first series of the Himalayan Dialogue will feature discussions on Nepal's foreign policy in two sessions, with participation from leaders of various political parties and experts in the diplomatic field, according to Gopal Khanal, Chairman of Foreign Affairs Media.
