SOLUKHUMBU: The Sagarmatha region has recently witnessed the arrival of nearly 700 tourists in a single day. The Office of the Sagarmatha National Park, located in Namche Bazaar, Solukhumbu district, reported recording 694 tourists in the Khumbu region on Monday alone.
Bibek Shrestha, ranger at the Office, stated that hotel occupancy was sufficient due to the large number of visitors. Out of the total, 608 were foreign tourists, while 86 were domestic visitors.
Renowned Sagarmatha climber Temba Chhiri Sherpa remarked that the influx of tourists coincided with the beginning of the Spring season. He said that finding quality accommodation had become challenging due to surge in arrivals.
Amrit Magar, In-Charge of Tara Air at Lukla airport, reported an increase in flights to Lukla, attributing it to clear weather. "We have added flights considering the improved weather so that more tourists can visit the district, home to the world's highest peak," he said, adding that hotel reservations are now in high demand.
Karma Sherma, Senior Vice President of Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN), said that tourism entrepreneurs were delighted to see the influx of visitors. He observed that the region, severely affected by the Covid 19 pandemic, is now bustling again.
Sherpa highlighted that the rise in tourist numbers in the Khumbu region also translates into increased job opportunities for locals. Hotels in Lukla and Namche Bazaar are reportedly packed.
The majority of tourists visit the Sagarmatha National Park, which contributes to increasing revenue. The Office of the Sagarmatha National Park informed that visitors from SAARC nations are charged an entry fee of Rs 1,500, while foreigners from other countries are required to pay Rs 3,000. Nepali nationals are charged Rs 100 as an entry fee.
