Lawmakers urge govt to avoid traditional, distributive budget approach

KATHMANDU: Members of the House of Representatives (HoR), during today's discussion session, argued that the forthcoming budget should not adopt a traditional and distributive approach.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Rajendra Kumar KC emphasised the need to focus policies, programmes, and the budget for the upcoming fiscal year on necessity rather than a traditional and distribution-oriented approach. During the special hour of the meeting, he stated that economic prosperity could not accelerate due to the lack of policies, programmes, and budgets centred on the country and its people.

CPN (UML) lawmaker Padam Giri remarked that the incumbent government was prioritising the country's economic prosperity. "The present government has been formed as per the commitment to people-centric development and construction," he said. CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Madhav Sapkota highlighted the need for the government to address public sentiments, adding that no one should engage in activities that contravene the constitution and laws.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Manish Jha criticised the government, claiming it was ruining the future of the youth. Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) whip Gyan Bahadur Shahi stressed the importance of the government protecting the lives and property of the people at all costs. CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Rajendra Pandey called on the government to address the demands of protesting teachers, resident doctors, and victims of microfinance and cooperatives.

Janata Samajbadi Party lawmaker Ranju Kumari Jha proposed a production and employment-oriented budget instead of a distribution-oriented one.

Prem Suwal of the Nepal Workers Peasants Party (NWPP) advised against allocating budgets to unproductive sectors based on accessibility and urged the government to formulate budgets, policies, and programmes with the people at the centre. Rastriya Janamorcha lawmaker Chitra Bahadur KC asserted that the monarchy, overthrown by the people through political movements, would not be restored under any circumstances.

Chanda Chaudhary condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India, and urged Nepal to stand firmly against terrorism and support India.

Lawmaker Narayan Prasad Acharya underscored the need for coordination among the three tiers of government to build a self-reliant economy and boost local production and employment. Similarly, Mukta Kumari Yadav demanded the removal of RPP chairman Rajendra Lingden's statement regarding the involvement of the NC joint general-secretary's son in the looting of Bhatbhateni liquor from the parliamentary records.
