
KATHMANDU: Tea exports from Nepal have reached Rs 3.57 billion as of April 13 in the current fiscal year 2024/25, which commenced on July 16, 2024. According to the National Tea and Coffee Development Board, exports are expected to total Rs 4.5 billion by the end of the fiscal year.
Board official Chandra Puri stated that Nepal's tea industry has generated approximately 60,000 jobs, with 171 tea estates and 120 small and medium tea processing centres operating nationwide.
In the fiscal year 2023/24, tea was cultivated on 20,760 hectares of land across Nepal, producing 27 million kilograms of processed tea. Puri noted that there are 15,203 tea farmers involved in the sector. He further highlighted that 16.5 million kilograms of tea, valued at Rs 3.63 billion, were exported during the previous fiscal year.
The Board is hosting a tea exhibition at Hariharbhawan in Pulchowk today to celebrate the 29th National Tea Day. The event seeks to promote Nepali tea in international markets and features discussions with representatives from various sectors, including tea farmers, workers, cooperatives, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and relevant organisations. Tea produced in districts across Nepal is being exhibited at the event.
This year's theme for National Tea Day is 'Healthy Tea, Sustainable Market, Foundation of Prosperous Nepal'.
