KATHMANDU: Sagarmatha Engineering College (SEC) organised a workshop on 'Roles, Practices and Needs of Problem-based Learning (PBL) Mentor' in Kathmandu.
PBL is one of the student-centric teaching methods which promotes the development of critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and communication skills in the students and learners.
The workshop was organised in association with Aalto University of Finland and co-funded by Erasmus Plus Programme of the European Union under the project 'Strengthening Problem-based Learning in South Asian Universities'.
According to professor engineer Ramesh Shrestha, the workshop aimed to develop best practices in PBL education as a joint initiative between ten higher education institutions from Finland, India, Nepal, Bhutan, The Netherlands and Lithuania.
Shrestha shared that the workshop was organised to strengthen capacity of partners of higher education institutions in the above-mentioned countries as well as to contribute to local innovative ecosystems.
Representatives from Aalto University, Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania and the Indian Institute of Technology presented papers on various topics including 'Roles of a Mentor in PBL', 'Quality and Assessment of Mentoring', and Future Plans of PBL South Asia Network respectively.
Similarly, participants including mentors, course coordinators, teacher trainers, external partners and students of newly adapted PBL course at the SEC other Nepali partner institutions including Nepal Engineering College (NEC), Kathmandu University and Asian Institution of Technology and Management (AITM) deliberated on the mentoring practices, current challenges and future needs for local mentors in implementing the PBL methods.
The SEC has implemented PBL methods on final year projects in the fourth year of bachelors' degree in civil, electronic and computer engineering.
