KATHMANDU: A meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for Thursday has been postponed till Friday, citing special reason.
Issuing a notice, the HoR meeting was postponed till 1:00 pm tomorrow. There was an agenda to hold discussion in principle on the US aid project — Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact — in the meeting.
The meeting was postponed after the Business Advisory Committee of HoR held at the Federal Parliament Building, New Baneshwor, today failed to forge consensus on the issue of forwarding the MCC compact.
Earlier, the ruling coalition partners CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist) urged the government not to proceed towards theoretical discussions in regard to a proposal tabled in parliament seeking to endorse the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with the US Government.
Today’s HoR session was scheduled to start deliberations on the proposal. Stating that a wider political consensus was lacking over the matter and the main opposition continued to obstruct the House, both parties called for suspending the further proceedings at the moment.
However, the ruling Nepali Congress insisted on moving the proposal to further parliamentary proceedings. It is said the CPN MC would discuss the matter inside the party to decide whether to entertain proposal or not.
Similarly, in view of CPN UML leader Bhim Bahadur Rawal, the proposal should not be moved forward amid the street protests against it.
The government had tabled the document in the Parliament on February 20 and it is required to be finalised by upcoming February 28 as per the deadline set by the US Government.
