Everything in life has a cost even though it may not be immediately apparent. In a world that is defined by the pursuit of worth whether wealth or happiness, we must understand that to gain something we must give up something.
People live their lives with a checklist. You do stuff. You acquire stuff. You grow old. And you die. You wait to lead the ideal life –home, car, family, bank balance, holidays abroad… bigger home, longer car, fatter bank balance, exotic holidays…. all the time creating arbitrary standards of the perfect life… often standards that you did not even create yourself in the first place!
Not meeting these goals or getting stuck, we blame the world for our problems. It’s either a bad boss, bad timing, bad government or just bad luck! Sure shit happens… and it happens to everyone but to blame others for your problems is your incapacity to take control of your own fate.
We often struggle with the culture of reward without risk and gain without the pain. Older people resign themselves to a strange formula of acceptance and the younger generation feels it is okay to want privileges but without the effort.
Happiness and success do not work in the way we think it does… it relies on constant progression which requires a person to work harder, smarter and challenge themselves further. It requires deeper purpose. It requires you to question and challenge your beliefs and values, and it also requires you to sometimes stand alone. It requires you to navigate between what you want and what is right. Not many possess this rare courage.
As a country we may not be the most talented or the most ambitious, but we can choose to be the most innovative and productive. We can create an economy that is sustainable and creative. We can build a country that believes in opportunities and progress. May be now is the time to question whether the country needs a strong and able leader or strong and able citizens?
