KATHMANDU: Famous poet and lyricist Basant Chaudhary released 'Aahana', a collection of children's poetry, on the birthday of his granddaughter Aahana Shakya (Chaudhary).
The poetry book written by Chaudhary was released amid a ceremony organised at the auditorium of Premier International School in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, on Sunday.
This is Chaudhary's first collection of children's poems published in his literary life. Before this, more than 20 collections of his poems and lyrics have been published. He has also composed a dozen of popular Nepali songs.
Chaudhary, his daughter Megha Chaudhary, granddaughter Aahana, son-in-law Paras Shakya and children launched the collection of children's poetry 'Aahana'.
Chaudhary's 'Aahana' published by Kopila Kitab in a colourful style with attractive decorations, contains 56 children's poems. The poetry book is available in both Nepali and English. Each poem is accompanied by attractive illustrations prepared by artist Bhanu Bhattarai.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chaudhary mentioned that he was very happy to release the collection of children's poetry and said, 'It seems that Basant (spring season) has come again. The mind is happy. He said that he watched his granddaughter from a young age as she grew older, made a collection of the moments he experienced and shared with his granddaughter and wrote the poems like his granddaughter. He said the poetry book 'Aahana' is also a reflection of his granddaughter.
On the occasion, 'Premil Kavi' Chaudhary expressed his views on the importance of children's literature which is his first attempt. He said that during his visit to different countries, he envied the achievement of children's literature there and added he could not understand why children's literature has fallen behind in Nepal.
Chaudhary expressed his gratitude to all the initiators of children's literature and lauded institutional works on children's literature. "There is no return when investing in children's literature or publishing works." He asserted that children's literature should be considered a movement rather than a business.
If creative things can be taught to children through poetry and songs, it will make a big difference and creative things will inhabit children's psyches, he opined and stressed that poetry and songs should also be included as a means of learning in Nepal just like a change happening in education field around the world.
Speaking at the event, Director of the school, Pabitra Limbu, said that Aahana received such a special birthday gift from her grandfather that that can be shared with everyone. She mentioned that it is fantastic to celebrate birthdays together with children of orphanages and help them.
Meanwhile, Aahana celebrated her birthday with the children of an orphanage and distributed school bags to them. The children recited some poems from the poetry collection.
