KATHMANDU: The Nepalese Society of Implant Dentistry (NSID), in partnership with the European Association of Dental Implantologists (BDIZ EDI), has recently concluded International Implantology Congress 2023 in Kathmandu.
The theme for the two-day event was 'Embracing the Future'. More than 250 dental surgeons and trade partners from several countries including Nepal, the United Kingdom, India, China, the USA, Australia, Germany, and Romania attended the event. Sixteen international speakers shared their expertise, offering evidence-based guidelines and consensus for better patient care.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr Sanduk Ruit, who shared his inspirational humanitarian journey, having given sight to over 180,000 individuals at a low cost. Dr Ruit inspired the audience to create similar treatments in dentistry. Eminent cardio-thoracic surgeon and President of the Nepal Medical Council, Dr Bhagwan Koirala, highlighted the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for all doctors.

During her welcome speech, NSID President Dr Rita Singh discussed Nepal's journey in providing dental implants to the Nepali population and the mouth-body connection's significance, emphasizing the various implications gum diseases have on general health. Dr
Neil Pande, founding President, and Organising Secretary of the conference emphasized the importance of prevention, stating that dental diseases are preventable. He recommended eating natural foods, avoiding junk and processed foods, rinsing the mouth with water after every meal or drink, brushing teeth at night, and regular check-ups to prevent dental diseases that affect a significant number of people worldwide. Dr Pande also mentioned that tooth loss has a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and should be immediately replaced with dental implants to prevent bone loss and complicated surgeries.
The international speakers shared various consensus and guidelines for better patient care, including options that can be maintained until the end of life, digital technologies for providing fast and reliable care, solutions for complete toothless patients, guided surgeries for precision and predictable care, and rehabilitation of patients with cancer and other jaw-related conditions. They also spoke on the importance of 3D positioning in implantology, managing deficient bone in the upper jaw, and the importance of evidence-based care.
The event provided a platform for sharing knowledge, experience, and the latest advancements in implant dentistry, including insights on the mouth-body connection and the importance of dental care for overall health. The audience was also informed about the increasing trend of oral diseases due to changing lifestyles, acidic beverages, and junk food. The speakers emphasized the need for prevention and early intervention, as dental diseases have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life.
The importance of CPD was highlighted by the speakers, emphasizing the need for regular training and skill updates to provide better patient care.
The NSID has been conducting various programmes in the field of implant dentistry, bringing together specialities and general dentists. The society has also been collaborating with international societies such as the European Association of Dental Implantologists and forging links with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The NSID is committed to patient-centric values and long-term care. The congress was a success and served as a platform for networking and knowledge sharing. It is hoped that such events will inspire more dentists to pursue implant dentistry and contribute to enhancing patient care.
