Just as the first winter breeze entered, the news of the new iPhones became all the hype yet again. Although Apple was a little late this year with its launch event which must have had something to do with the unrest from the pandemic, it has done something unheard of. Apple launched four separate iPhone models in 2020. This year surely packs a lot of surprises. The iPhone lineup this year consists of: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Finally, Apple has succumbed to market pressure and their website is now offering iPhones at every price point starting at $399 for the iPhone SE. After that, for every hundred dollar increment you get a better phone; a pattern that can be seen all the way upto the $1,099 iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Without doubt, the iPhone 12s are the belles of the ball here. They are the best of the best but they are pretty confusing too. At worst Apple seems confused too, but Apple is far smarter than it’s letting on.
There is nothing new about the iPhone prices being inflated in Nepal. So, we’ll let that slide for now. Notice how the prices for anything over the base-model iPhone 12 Pro will get you in the same price category as the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
This is true for every iPhone on Apple’s lineup this year. If you want the base model, fine have the absolute least but if you want to have anything more than that you are already in the next category’s price range.
For instance, if you go to place your pre-order for the iPhone 12 Mini today, you get the absolute base model with 64 Gigs of memory for $699 which seems fair as it gets the same processor as the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup and even the same cameras as the iPhone 12 Pro, except the 2x telephoto lens ofcourse.
However, for many of us who will be shooting tonnes of photos and 4k videos on our iPhones, 64 GB of storage is not really enough.“Okay, let’s get the 128 GB version then.”
It would then cost $780. Then you start to think, “Well… I could just get the bigger iPhone 12. After all, it is a step up.”
On the other hand, it might also be possible that Apple is offering phones at every price range so that it can accommodate for the post-pandemic economy. Whatever the reasons behind Apple doing what they did, one thing is for certain: the iPhone 12 lineup is the best one we’ve had so far. Personally, I am a fan of the new design language taken from the iPad Pro and the new iPad Air.
In a world of curved screens and tapered rails, the iPhone 12s really do stand out. Some might argue that the phones are less gripable because of the design but even if you do drop your new iPhone, the new ceramic shield front allegedly offers four times better drop performance than previous generations. The new iPhones also get the industry leading IP68 dust and water resistance which makes them water resistant for up to 30 minutes at a depth of six meters.
Plus they get superb performance thanks to the A14 Bionic SOC, the fastest chip in any smartphone, paired with the optimisations that Apple is known for. The iPhone 12s also get 5G but it’s doubtful that the Nepali market is going to enjoy those ridiculous speeds anytime soon.
