KATHMANDU: Accountability Lab Nepal — a network of labs making governance work for people — Friday held the Integrity Icon 2021 – Award Ceremony in Kathmandu, on Friday.
Five government officials who received huge public recognition and were promoted through nationwide online and offline campaigns were crowned as Nepal’s eighth batch of Integrity Icons at the ceremony.
Shila Sharma, a Nursing Officer at Bheri Hospital, Nepalgunj, Banke; Dr Lok Bahadur Lopchan, Under Secretary Language Commission, Kathmandu; Manamaya Bhattari Pangeni, Nawalpur’s Chief District Officer; Chandrakant Chaudhary, Agriculture Officer at Makwanpurgadhi Rural Municipality, Makwanpur; and Dr Sumitra Gautam, Medical Superintendent at Bhaktapur Hospital, Bhaktapur are this year’s Icons.
Due to the risk posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony took place in a closed group event participated by 100 people. The event was live-streamed through Integrity Icon’s official Facebook Page with more than 10,000 viewers.
In the run-up to the award ceremony, a number of offline and online campaigns were held across Nepal to engage the public and promote the Icons’ exemplary work. Each Icon was recognised with a title for going above and beyond to serve the public. Shila Sharma was recognised as “Determined and Generous”, Manamaya Bhattarai Pangeni as “Inspirational and Courageous”, Chandrakant Chaudhary as “Innovative and Visionary”, Dr Sumitra Gautam as, “Resilient and Transformational” and Dr Lok Bahadur Lopchan as “Resolute and Persistent”.

The keynote speaker for the event, Anuradha Koirala, CNN Hero 2010 and Founder of Maiti Nepal shared, “Integrity is a value that comes from within and should be devoid of personal desires. The person who does not have self-autonomy over their decisions will always falter".
On the occasion, Hari Sharma, a political analyst, said, “When a person with integrity does not divert from their path and gives continuity to their honest work, they can become a role model for others."
The passionate team from Accountability Lab Nepal has run a widely-supported Integrity Icon campaign annually since then and expanded its work in migrant rights and budget transparency through our Civic Action Teams.
The award ceremony was held at Hotel Shanker, Lazimpat, Kathmandu, on Friday, October 29.
Integrity Icon Nepal is a national movement to celebrate, encourage and connect government officials that work with Integrity in Nepal. This campaign, which started in Nepal in 2014, is now being replicated in 15 countries across the world.
