KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said the government has been working seriously on the issues of climate change and its impacts. The Prime Minister pointed out the need for the government, private sector and other stakeholders to work together on the issues of climate change. In his address to a programme ‘Unity for Sustainability’ organised in Kathmandu on Friday by Annapurna Media Network in the context of climate change, PM Deuba claimed that the government has categorically put its stance on climate change at the national and international arena. Saying that media can also play a crucial role to lessen the negative impacts of climate change, PM Deuba, the President of the Nepali Congress, urged multiple stakeholders to remain active in addressing the climate issues. The media’s role is spectacular especially in raising public awareness on environment protection and climate change, he stressed. PM Deuba also expressed the government’s commitment to work on the climate change agenda with short-term and long-term plans. Highlighting the importance of private sector engagement in such issues, the PM urged the private sector for collaboration to that end. The government is working on climate change issues by formulating its policy, he shared, adding Nepal had categorically articulated its agenda and stance on climate change in the Conference of Parties (COP26). The government has adopted a policy to reduce carbon emission and deforestation to zero, he informed. On the occasion, video messages of former Prime Ministers, KP Sharma Oli, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal were presented.
