Government to provide Rs 200,000 per quake victim as immediate relief

KATHMANDU: The government has made a decision to provide Rs 200,000 per person to the families who lost their members in the earthquake that struck Jajarkot on Friday night.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held at Singha Durbar on Sunday took a decision to this effect, said government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma. She said this assistance is the first phase of immediate relief.

Similarly, she said the Cabinet paid tribute to the deceased persons and decided to expedite the rescue and relief works and to provide free medical treatment to those injured in the earthquake.

At least 157 people lost their lives in Jajarkot and Rukum (West) districts as a 6.4 magnitude earthquake with epicentre in Jajarkot hit the districts.

The meeting also decided to provide free medical treatment at all the hospitals to those injured in the earthquake.

Minister of Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet informed mediapersons that a decision was taken to move ahead with the post-quake relief and rehabilitation work, learning from the lessons of the Gorkha Earthquake.
