Rana, first NRB Governor, passes away at 95

KATHMANDU: Himalaya Shumsher JB Rana, first Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), passed away on Sunday. He was 95.

Former Governor Rana had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past five years.

He was receiving treatment at Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu.

Rana was born in 1928 on Swasthani Purnima, an auspicious day.

Rana, previously a government secretary, was appointed as the first governor of NRB. Former late king Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah appointed Rana as NRB Governor when the latter was 29 years.

He was the founder of Himalayan Bank — the first private bank of Nepal.

Rana was active even at the age of 95. He was preparing to publish two books.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
