Islington College inaugurates first educational cybersecurity research centre in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Islington College, a leading institution in higher education, has inaugurated the first Educational Cybersecurity Research Centre in Nepal.

The college inaugurated the research centre in collaboration with representatives from London Metropolitan University and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, solidifying Islington's dedication to advancing cybersecurity education and research in Nepal.

The research centre aims to encourage research on cybersecurity threats, explore emerging technologies within the cybersecurity domain based on the research done here by the academic staff, students, and alumni, and lastly practise digital forensics in investigating cyber incidents by focusing on training and research in the specialised field. To achieve these goals, the research hub is equipped with a digital forensics lab, a security operations centre (SOC), and a research centre.

The Cybersecurity Research Hub at Islington College is an initiative that aims to address the growing challenges in the realm of cybersecurity, according to the college. With a focus on education, research, and practical application, the centre is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of cybersecurity in Nepal.

The college welcomed Minister for Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma at the inaugural ceremony. The establishment of the first-ever Educational Cybersecurity Research Centre of Nepal is a significant milestone for Islington College as well as Nepal. The research hub helps to ensure that Nepal has the skilled cybersecurity professionals needed to protect its critical infrastructure from cyberattacks.

Others present at the inaugural ceremony included Professor Nona McDuff, Pro Vice-Chancellor and students from London Metropolitan University. They highlighted the international collaboration and recognition of Islington College's efforts in the field of cybersecurity education.

Monil Adhikari, a prominent figure actively working in the cybersecurity field and serving as the Digital Forensics Senior Lecturer at Islington College and Human Risk Assessment Lead at Vairav, is said to be a key contributor to the centre's success. With expertise in data privacy and cybersecurity awareness, Adhikari has played a crucial role in shaping the vision of the Cybersecurity Research Centre.

Islington College has taken pride in stepping towards enhancing cybersecurity education and research in Nepal. The Cybersecurity Research Hub serves as an academic research centre and also bridges the gap between academia and industry by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
