KMC plans to manage waste depositions within four days

A A- A+
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office said it has planned to manage the solid waste in the valley within the next four days. According to KMC Office's Environment Department Chief Sarita Rai, works are in progress with the plan to complete the management of garbage piled up on the sides of streets and crossroads by this week. Rai said the waste from major streets has been managed and the KMC plans to collect the remaining waste from the inner streets by Saturday. At present, 300 vehicles transport waste to Bancharedanda landfill site on a daily basis. The number of waste containers is more than the normal time due to the remaining waste that needs to be collected. A few days ago, KMC Mayor Balendra Shah directed private companies involved in garbage management to conclude the management within a week. It may be noted that the management of waste generated in the Kathmandu Valley was halted for two months due to the road disruption caused by monsoon rains and sometimes obstruction of Sisdole and Bancharedanda residents who were non-cooperating with the KMC citing the latter failed to implement agreements reached with them. Last week,  a four-point agreement was signed among the Chief District Officers of Kathmandu, Dhading and Nuwakot districts and residents of Sisdole and Bancharedanda, paving the way to resume the management works from last Thursday. From the valley, 1,200 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated and the KMC is the highest contributor (over 500 metric tonnes) to this volume.  Waste from the KMC and 17 other local levels are disposed of in Bancharedanda for years.
