‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ conferred on Bhinda Swari Shah

KATHMANDU: Media9 honoured six women at the fifth edition of the 'Hyatt WOW Women Achievers Award' ceremony in Kathmandu, on Thursday. WOW, the women's monthly magazine, held the award ceremony to shine the light on women achievers in the country in five distinct categories — Arts, Entrepreneurship, Social Activism, Leadership, and the Award for Inspiring Woman of the Year. A new category, ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ was also introduced this year.  Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal, Nona Deprez, honoured Bhinda Swari Shah, the first Nepali woman to pursue Bachelor's and Master's degree in the USA and Nepal's first woman ambassador to India, with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. Shah’s son, Anil Keshary Shah, received the award on her behalf. Addressing the programme, he said that there should be no stigma attached to being a woman or having a daughter. He took a pride in women's efforts in making a change in society.  [gallery link="file" columns="1" size="full" ids="34817,34820,34821"] The honoree for the category 'Entrepreneurship' was Sonika Manandhar, Co-founder of Aloi Global. Likewise, Mamta Siwakoti, Founder of The Digital Lawyer, was the honoree in the category ‘Leadership’, Bhawana Raut, a political activist, in the category ‘Social Activism’. Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar, who is also the Founder of Prisoners Assistance (PA) Nepal, was honoured for making a mark in her field beyond the ordinary, the inspiring woman of the year. Actor Surakshya Panta was the honoree in the category 'Arts'. Addressing the programme, keynote speaker Bhawana Raut emphasized the importance of raising voices and staging sit-ins to draw the government’s attention to the issues concerned with women's rights and gender equality. She lamented that women are revered as ‘Devi’, the deities, in society but in practice, they are exploited.  [gallery size="full" link="file" columns="2" ids="34850,34849,34825,34826,34824,34823"] On the occasion, Media9 Director Sanket Lamichhane felicitated an all-women panel of judges comprising Prof Dr Madhu Dixit Devkota, Executive Chairperson of Upendra Devkota Memorial National Institute of Neurological and Allied Science; Neeru Rayamajhi, President of Federation of Women Entrepreneurs' Associations of Nepal (FWEAN); Pranu Singh, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brands and Marketing of the Standard Chartered Bank Nepal; Shaguni Singh Sakya, Director of KGH Group; Srijana Jyoti, Managing Director, Honda Cars, Syakar Trading of the Jyoti Group; Rita Shrestha, Owning Company of the Hyatt Regency Kathmandu; and Rohini Rana, Author of 'The RANA COOKBOOK: Recipes From The Palaces of Nepal'. Addressing the programme, EU Ambassador Nona Deprez stressed the need for effective implementation of laws related to gender equality. She mentioned there is also a backlash against political priority in Europe and suggested women should be careful and fight for gender equality for the present and future generations.  On the occasion, Amuda Mishra, Founder and Executive Director of Ujyalo Foundation, moderated a panel discussion with four personalities who have interfaced with technology to create movements of social change, and activism and as a tool for information dissemination. The panellists including Shailee Chaudhary, Mamta Siwakoti, Prakriti Dhakal and Pukar Bam discussed the topic ‘What’s your hashtag’. Chaudhary mentioned how women were exploited in the patriarchal society. She said hashtags were strong tools in social campaigns. In the discussion, Bam said the #EnoughIsEnough campaign led to a fast-unto-death programme to raise the voice against the authorities’ arbitrary decision during the first phase of the Covid lockdown.
