Minister Sharma directs envoys to take initiative to increase inflow of remittance, tourists

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Janardan Sharma has directed the chief of missions abroad to take initiative to increase the inflow of remittances and foreign tourists by conducting promotional programmes. In a virtual meeting held with more than two dozen ambassadors, acting ambassadors and chief of missions in various countries on Sunday afternoon, Finance Minister Sharma said that all parties should work together as the government is under pressure to increase foreign exchange and make the balance of payments positive. He urged them to encourage the migrant workers to send money to Nepal through remittances and to organise various programmes conveying the message that Covid 19 infections have subsided in Nepal so that more and more tourists visit Nepal. Giving information that remittance of Rs 91 billion has been received from mid-March till now, he said that the figure further needs to be increased. Minister Sharma informed that various packages are being launched to increase remittances by allocating a certain percentage to remittance sender to invest in initial public offering (IPO) and follow-on public offer (FPO). He said, discussions on this topic were held with the heads of missions, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get suggestions for the preparation of the budget for the fiscal year 2022/23. Finance Minister also said that an environment should be created to increase foreign investment in Nepal by organising investment conferences. He also requested to suggest the kind of products that are in demand in various countries to see if such products could be produced in Nepal. On the occasion, Finance Secretary Madhu Kumar Marasini said the economy was under pressure and the government was moving towards gradual improvement. Likewise, Acting Governor Neelam Dhungana Timsina pointed out the need to work together to improve the situation citing that the economy is under pressure. READ ALSO:
