KATHMANDU: Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) honoured Ram Mainali, Director of the Department of Customs, on the occasion of the 71st International Customs Day, on Thursday.
Mainali was honoured for providing excellent service in the Customs Department.
NCC President Rajendra Malla and Finance Secretary Toyam Raya honoured Director Mainali with a certificate at a programme held at Chamber Bhawan in Jamal, Kathmandu.
Mainali was honoured for providing excellent service on the recommendation of the Customs Department, according to Malla. Mainali, who has worked in the Ministry of Finance for a long time, previously worked as the chief of Rasuwa Customs Office, Timure. He made a contribution when the Ministry of Finance implemented the VAT system.
Addressing the programme, NCC President Malla said the trade should be facilitated so that imports are discouraged and exports are promoted. He suggested the transaction value should be recognised rather than the reference value at the customs office. "The revenue will improve only if the customs administration is improved," he said and added the revenue target should be met by making the field of customs broader rather than increasing the tax rate.
He suggested making the system in the customs administration digital and building international-level laboratories at the customs points.
Finance Secretary Raya said that there was no problem in maintaining the transaction value at the customs checkpoints. He expressed that he also felt the need for reforms in customs.
Director General at the Department of Customs, Chakra Bahadur Budha, said that work was underway to introduce a digital system to facilitate trade through customs checkpoints
