KATHMANDU: Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) has drawn the attention of Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to control illegal trade taking place across the Nepal-India border. While congratulating the newly appointed Home Minister Lamichhane on Wednesday, a delegation led by NCC President Rajendra Malla asked for the control of unauthorised trade taking place at the border. In the meeting with Home Minister, NCC President Malla suggested that illegal business should be controlled by organising the border. He said the government was losing billions of rupees in revenue due to illegal businesses going on taking advantage of open borders. He suggested such illegal trade should be effectively monitored and brought under taxation. President Malla expressed that nearly 40% of illegal trade was taking advantage of the open borders between Nepal and India, and emphasized the importance of organising imports and exports for the commercial balance of country. The representatives of NCC submitted 10-point suggestions to Home Minister Lamichhane in regard to the management of illegal trade at borders. Meanwhile, the NCC officials also appealed to the Home Minister to collect the details related to the skills of youths returning from foreign employment and to create an environment where they can use their skills in the country. The private sector's organisation also urged Minister Lamichhane to take effective measures to control the incidents of financial crimes such as hacking of banking software and unauthorised theft of cash from ATMs. The chamber also demanded the government take suggestions from all stakeholders and organise laws related to cyber security based on international practice. Moreover, the NCC officials also urged the Home Minister to create an environment where night businesses in Thamel (Kathmandu), Sauraha (Chitwan) and Pokhara (Kaski) can operate safely. On the occasion, Home Minister Lamichhane said that he has alerted the security agencies to stop the unauthorised trade at the border. The minister said he was trying to set a system that is not protected by leaders, but by policies, and added he was trying to create a business environment to the extent that laws are not violated.
