KATHMANDU: Nepalaya Publication has released 'National Security And The State: A Focus on Nepal', a book by Brigadier General (Retd) Keshar Bahadur Bhandari PhD in the capital.
The book delves into the army's trajectory over several decades into Nepal's various important political and geopolitical issues. The author talks about the destabilising factors that have impacted the development of the county and also cautioned that the uranium mines in the country should tomorrow not compromise the nation's security. He also cautions about religion being used as a political tool for destabilisation. The general also puts emphasis on the need for a National Security Policy.
Retd Lieutenant Balananda Sharma introduced the author and the book.
The launch event had a dialogue between the author, Brigadier General (Retd) Bhandari and media personality, Bhushan Dahal. The conversation addressed issues on national security, with a specific focus on the National Security Policy that has yet to see light despite several changes in government over a long period of time. The author asserted that besides a small component that should remain classified, the National Security Policy should be a white paper that should be available to the general public. He advised that political security is an aspect of national security and to not having a National Security Policy puts the state into a vulnerable position and only serves the vested interests of political parties in power.
The general also pointed out that Nepal's role and strength would lie in catalysing India and China's joint economic interests.
The book took four years in the making and is projected to be an important read for people interested in nation-building, politics, security and conflict management, and development.
