Phulpati being observed on seventh day of Dashain today

A A- A+
KATHMANDU: Phulpati is being taken into the homes as per tradition throughout the country on the seventh day of Dashain today. Pulpati, an assortment of flowers, leaves and fruits of different plants considered auspicious, is anointed at the Dashain Ghar on the occasion. On this day, jamara (maize and barley saplings), belpatra (leaves of wood apple), banana stalks, sugarcane sticks tied with red cloth, and Kalash filled with holy water are brought to Hanumandhoka Durbar from Gorkha on a decorated palanquin. On the occasion, Nepali Army holds a parade at Tundikhel that includes gun firing, which is observed by the president and government officials every year. Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti (NPNS) determined the auspicious time for bringing Phulpati to the Dashain Ghar at 10:05 am on October 2. However, NPNS Chairperson Prof Shree Krishna Adhikari says it does not require an auspicious hour to take Phulpati into homes Though the Dashain festival begins from Ghatasthapana, the festival sees special fervour from the day of Phulpati. All government offices, as well as private offices, remain closed from Phulpati to Dwadashi encouraging people to go back to their respective ancestral homes and take blessings from Durga Bhawani as well as their elders. This year October 3 and 4 will mark Mahaashtami (Kalratri), and Mahanavami respectively. Vijaya Dashami, the main day of Badadashain will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 5. Though tika can be received and offered from the day of Vijaya Dashami to Kojagrat Purnima on October 9, the most auspicious time for receiving and offering tika is at 11:51 am on Vijaya Dashami, NPNS said. According to Hindu myth, Goddess Durga had killed demon king Mahishasur on Mahanavami and hence Vijaya Dashami symbolises the victory of good over evil.
