32 bodies retrieved, identified from plane crash site in Pokhara

KATHMANDU: Thirty-two bodies were retrieved from the site where the plane crashed in Pokhara, Kaski district today. The ATR-72 aircraft of Yeti Airlines carrying 68 passengers and four crew members crashed in Pokhara this morning. According to Kaski’s Assistant Chief District Officer Anil Shahi, the rescue works have been facing challenges as the site of the crash is in the Seti River gorge. Rescue works have been continued and so far mortal remains of 32 people have been retrieved. The plane crashed following a failed landing at the Pokhara Regional International Airport. The passengers who met with an aircraft crash have been identified. Sixty-eight passengers (60 Nepali nationals and eight foreign ones) and four crew members including Captains Kamal KC and Anju Khatiwada were onboard the aircraft when it crashed. Three of the passengers were infants, three minors, and three incapacitated people. The Nepali passengers have been identified as Kisan Acharya, Nishanta Acharya, Shaligram Acharya, Sadakat Alimiya, Purna Bahadur Gurung, Jitendra Bahadur Kunwar, Alina Bandro and Anisha Baniya. Similarly, others are Slok Bhatta, Nira Chhantyal, Aashima Gurung, Anusha Gurung, Belman Gurung, Bijaya Kumar Gurung, Jiban Kala Gurung, Maya Gurung, Lucky Gurung, Shiva Kumar Gurung, Sita Gurung, Yamuna Gurung, Yasmin Gurung, Rabin Hamal, Sanjaya Jiasawal, Sonu Jaisawal, Rachana Kafle, Sita Kumari Khadka, Anil Kumar Rajbhar, Bhagawati Kunwar, Abishek Kushwaha, Om Maya Gurung, Susma Pandey, Hari Pariyar, Laxmi Pariyar, Rita Pariyar, Arun Paudel, Laxmi Paudel, Prasiddhi Paudel, Tribhuvan Paudel and Pojan Rana. Others have been identified as Sabina Rayamajhi, Rajan Sapkota, Anil Shahi, Sangita Shahi, Jamuna Sharma, Bishal Sharma, Yubaraj Sharma, Mohan Shrestha, Dr Shona Diwakar, Bandana Sunsar, Rajusingh Thakuri, Churna Thapa, Ganesh Thapa and Lawaraj Timilsina. The children are Krish Pariyar, Prasiddhi Paudel and Aayurdhi Sharma, and the identity of three infants has yet to be established. The foreign nationals have been identified as Love Mayron, IIurii Lygin, Victor Lygin, Jannetsandra Palavecino, Victoria Altunina, Elena Banduro, Ruan Calum Crighton and Alexandre Isidore. (Updated)

The employees at the airport briefed the Prime Minister on the incident. PM Dahal instructed all bodies of the government to swing into rescue operation in an effective way. [gallery columns="1" link="file" size="full" ids="32447,32448,32449,32450"] The ATR-72 aircraft carrying 68 passengers including eight foreign nationals, two pilots — Captains Kamal KC and Anju Khatiwada — and two air hostesses crashed in the gorge of Seti River between the old and new airports while it was landing. The passengers included 62 adults, three children and three incapacitated people. The crashed aircraft had taken off at 10:33 am from TIA and had taken permission to land, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) information officer Gyanendra Bhul. "There was no weather issue. The accident took place due to a technical glitch with the aircraft according to the preliminary information. We have received information that aircraft caught fire in the sky," he said. Pokhara Int'l Airport shut for flights today  The Airport Spokesperson Teknath Sitaula confirmed the cancellation of all today-scheduled flights at the airport.
