PM Deuba grieves death of six persons in Sudurpaschim earthquake

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has condoled the death of six persons in the houses destroyed by an earthquake in Doti last night. According to Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (EMRC), an earthquake with a magnitude 5.7 occurred at 9:07 pm and magnitude 4.1 at 9:56 pm on Tuesday, and a magnitude 6.6 at 2:12 am today. The earthquakes had their epicentres around Khaptad National Park. The earthquake was felt in most of the districts of the Sudur Paschim province. It was a fresh tremor and not an aftershock of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, according to NSRC. Photo: RSS[/caption] PM Deuba has instructed the agencies concerned to be mobilised in rescue and relief works in the affected areas and manage appropriate treatment for the people injured in the disaster. "I pay tribute to those killed in the earthquake with its epicentre in Khaptad area of Sudurpaschim and extend deep condolences to their family members," PM Deuba shared on Twitter. Six persons, including three from the same family, were killed when a house was destroyed by the tremor at Gairagaun in Purbi Chauki Rural Municipality-3 in Doti.

Photo: RSS[/caption] Five persons who sustained serious injuries in the collapse of houses are undergoing treatment at the Doti Hospital. A team from Nepali Army (NA) rescued the injured and took them by helicopter to Doti Hospital early morning for treatment, according to NA spokesperson Narayan Silwal. The NA’s helicopters from Surkhet and Dhangadhi of Kailali rescued the injured persons. Similarly, NA troops from Bhairab Battalion were deployed at the site for rescue, taking help from locals and other security forces. Relief items including food items and tents are delivered at the site, the NA spokesperson added. Communication services have been disrupted at many places in Doti following the tremor, locals reported. Many people rushed out of their homes even in Dhangadhi of Kailali district at night as the earthquake rocked the district. However, there is no report of human casualties in the district so far, Kailali's Chief District Officer (CDO) Kiran Thapa said. Meanwhile, in Achham district which shares the border with Doti, many houses in Shantada and Mangalsen areas are said to have developed cracks due to the tremor. Police Inspector Kailash Singh informed that no loss of life or property is reported in Achham so far. READ ALSO:
