Use of ‘letter of declaration’ decreasing at Birgunj Customs Office

PARSA: The use of 'letter of declaration' has decreased at Birgunj Customs Office with the decline in imports via the Birgunj checkpoint. The use of 'letter of declaration' has decreased by 24% in 11 months of the current fiscal year 2022/23 as compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year. A total of 181,461 letters of declaration were used in the 11 months of the previous fiscal year while only 138,172 declaration forms were used during the corresponding period in the current fiscal year, which is less by 43,279. Information Officer at the Birgunj Customs Office, Ram Chandra Sharma Dhakal, shared that the use of the 'letter of declaration' was less by 23% from red channel, 20% from yellow channel and 34% from green channel during the 11 months of the current fiscal as compared to the previous fiscal year. The decrease in imports of goods via Birgunj has negatively impacted revenue collection, Dhakal informed. The Department of Customs had set a target of collecting Rs 237 billion in revenue during 11 months of the current fiscal year.
