Shesh Narayan named Nepal’s Integrity Idol 2017

A A- A+
Shesh Narayan Poudel is Nepal’s Integrity Idol winner for 2017. Chosen from over 1,000 nominees from across the country, Poudel found popularity in his efforts to bring government to citizens, allowing them avoid costly and bureaucratic processes to obtain the most basic services; and through organizing mobile camps to support Nepalis in obtaining their citizenship. These efforts have earned him the respect of service seekers, fellow colleagues, the wider Morang community, and now a national recognition. Thanking everyone for the award, Poudel said, “I commit to serve as a public servant with more honesty and focus in my everyday efforts to assist citizens. This award has instilled more responsibility in me and has motivated me to continue to do better.” More recently, he won praise for managing the emergency response during last year’s Terai flood. As Morang’s Chief District Officer, he dispatched public workers to go door to door visiting victims and set up a system to disseminate critical information to citizens and the media. He carried out similar work during the 2015 earthquake and after the disaster had organised mobile camps in places where public services are minimal to meet critical citizen needs. Through his actions, Shesh has helped rebuild trust in government services and inspire a new generation of civil servants. Now a global initiative, Integrity Idol began in Nepal in 2014 as a way to recognise and inspire government officials. The four other finalists in the 2017 competition include Sabnam Pathak, an assistant forest officer in Kathmandu; Shabraj Bam, a teacher at Panchadev Secondary School of Kalikot; Srijana Tiwari, an Under Secretary in the Ministry of General Administration, Kathmandu; and Krishna Dhital, a Field Extension Officer of Agricultural Department, Dhulikhel.
